Is carrageenansafe?- What everyone is saying out there

Carrageenan is mixed with different food ingredients to make the item thickener. Chondrus Crispus, a red seaweed, from which, carrageeninsare extracted has its significance since fifteen century. Although it has been tested and found- there is no nutritional value, it has some unique property of improving the texture of cottage cheese, yogurt and other similar products.

What science has to say?

Research has shown that red seaweed constitutes of three different carrageenins that include Kappa-carrageenan, Lota-carrageenan and Lambda-carrageenan. The Kappa contains one sulfate group per disaccharide while next contains two and third respectively.

You might unknown to the fact that each of these carrageenins has specific properties which are thoroughly tested. Each has the property of making bonds with protein molecules present in the food items like cheese, milk, chocolate to make them thickener.

Is it safe to mix with food items?

An excess of any constituent can produce harmful effects. The same is for this red edible seaweed extract.After testing, the results show that limited amount of carrageenan can be used to replace gelatin.



Suppose any food item has an excess amount of this additive, it is possible that consumer might be suffered from stomach discomfort and headache. In extreme cases, it has the property to make you suffer from gastrointestinal problems.

For example

Chemicals like potassium sorbate and carbon dioxide are used in cottage cheese to preserve the freshness of the item. If the constituent, potassium sorbate is present in anexcess amount, it can be a reason for watery eyes. It may also lead to other problems such as upset stomach, vomiting, etc.

So, it is often recommended to purchase food products after checking thequantity of the ingredients (for the first time) present in it.This makes you sure about your intake. And from next time onwards, you are well-aware of the same product before purchasing.
